The ghost of Lady Sybil, poisoned by her husband, has been haunting her ancestral home, Harroweby House for going on 100 years. The home has recently been let to a trio of sleazy conspirators who have all but kidnapped the rightful heirs to the Harroweby fortune: lovely young Lady Selinda and her very precocious 10 year old younger sister Lady Lucy, following the untimely deaths of their parents from typhus. The pretenders to the fortune are the so-called Aunt Prudence, her oafish son Rupert, and Prudence's nasty companion/governess Miss Snypish. Enter the eccentric but oh-so handsome, wealthy, and kindly Lord Waverly who notices that things are just not quite right with the orphaned sisters and the goings-on at Harroweby house. Ahah, but young Lucy is not only very bright but she possesses the paranormal "six sense" in that she is the only one who can actually SEE and communicate with the ghost of Lady Sybil! Discovering that the late Lady Sybil is indeed little Lucy's great-great grandmother sets the unlikely pair into a plan to rescue them from the clutches of the three nasty conspirators who plan to rob them of their inheritance by getting rank Rupert to compromise beautiful Lady Selinda into a forced marriage. But with the help of Lord Waverly, (who is smitten by the charms of Lady Selinda) clever Lucy and her new friend ghostly Lady Sybil, can they save the day? The characters in this stellar tale are delightful, either in their goodness or in the case of the three conspirators, delightfuly awful. The character of young Lucy is especially charming and loveable. Fraught with unique twists and turns, harrowing suspense, and gut-busting humor, the introduction of the haunting but kindly Lady Sybil makes this Regency romance thoroughly unique. It is skillfully written with all of the historical authenticity throughout and light-hearted entertainment at its best.

High Spirits at Harroweby eBook Mary Chase Comstock Reviews

I'm not a fan of preternatural romances generally. In fact it saddened me to see Nora Roberts go that route. But this writer makes the device work. Her story pokes good natured fun at the old gothic romances and the young debs who set such store by them in regency times. She even seems to poke fun at herself for using those gothic devices, but she uses them sparingly and uses them well.

This is a fun read for any fan of emergency era fiction and will give readers a better understanding of the time and its popular romance fiction. I lucked out and got it for free on Bookbub, but it's worth buying. Check it out. Chuckles guaranteed.
I have to say I laughed quite a bit while reading this book. Just the names of the characters were hysterical. Who names someone Rupert? Or Snypish???? Really????? When you put those names into the context of who those characters were, I just kept laughing more and more! The whole ghost issue completely made this book. I roared when the ghost made the different characters dream. When the characters kept going after each other for different reasons, I also had to laugh.

This is not an overly complex book by any stretch. It's definitely light-hearted, and fun to read!!!
This was an enjoyable book to read. As one reviewer commented, there is an 'attempted' rape about 30% of the way through the book. That was not "funny" or a "romp." It wasn't meant to be. This is a very typical regency style romance in that you have a pair of sisters at the mercy of very evil guardians. (The attempted rape shows you how evil the guardians are.) The humor comes into play with the addition of a family ghost and the way the sisters deal with their dire situation. Naturally as per any good regency romance, there's a handsome hero to help rescue them.
I didn't know what to expect from this book as I have never read anything by this author. I thought it was cute and a little different with the ghost aspect. The guy and girl fall in love rather quickly- not a lot of character development, but a fun enough read. I downloaded it when it was free and I plan on looking at more by this author. I would classify it as a clean read- there are a few references or situations that bring up sex but if you consider Pride & Prejudice a clean read I think you will be okay with this too.
Objectively, this was probably a 3.75-4.15 star book. It just happens to be one from which I derived a 5+++ star enjoyment. ) It's uniquely joyful, witty, energetic fun, but just when you think it's so light that it's about to float away, you're happily surprised by jolts of touching poignancy. The characters aren't going to win any awards for depth, but they're just so eminently likable and root-worthy that I found myself enjoying every minute in their company. Even the villains are amusingly 'love to hate' types.

Be prepared to suspend more than the usual amount of disbelief---after all, the spirit of a deceased relative is a major character, and some implausible (albeit highly humorous) zaniness ensues. But if you're craving frothy fun, I can't recommend this one highly enough. It's got gothic elements while also gently mocking gothics. We gets tons of exclamation points and too many flowery adjectives and adverbs, and yet it's a stylistic choice that feels deliberate---and it works. What truly elevates this above similar fare isn't what's written, but HOW it's written. Those who have bravely suffered through my reviews know that writing style factors very, very heavily (perhaps too heavily?!) into my overall opinion of a book, and this author turns a phrase in a way that fills my fangirl-y heart with joy and exhausts my 's highlight button.

I'm off to seek out other books by this author. I have a sneaking suspicion that even her version of the phone book might fill me with glee )
